Today’s Green Light shines on Kheyti, an organization planting seeds of hope for farmers whose livelihoods — and often their survival — have been increasingly threatened by climate change.

Where the Story Begins 🌾

Kheyti was co-founded in India by Kaushik Kappagantula and a small team

of innovators who came from backgrounds in engineering,

agriculture, and social entrepreneurship. But the spark behind

Kheyti wasn’t simply technology — it was compassion born

from witnessing a growing crisis among smallholder farmers.

In India and many regions around the world, farming is more

than a profession. It is a generational identity, a cultural backbone, and often a family’s only source of income and food security. For millions of small farmers, their crops are their livelihood, their savings account, and their future.

As climate change began altering rainfall patterns, intensifying droughts, and increasing unpredictable storms, farmers found themselves facing devastating crop failures. One failed season could plunge families into severe debt. Multiple failed seasons often meant losing land that had been passed down for generations.

In some regions, this crisis grew tragically severe. Financial collapse and the overwhelming pressure to provide for families contributed to heartbreaking rates of farmer suicides — a reality that deeply moved the founders of Kheyti and many others working within agricultural communities.

A Question That Changed Everything 💡

Rather than asking how agriculture could become more technologically advanced for large-scale commercial farms, Kheyti’s founders asked a very different question:

How can we design climate solutions specifically for small farmers who are the most vulnerable?

That question became the foundation of their mission.

The “Greenhouse-in-a-Box”🌱

Kheyti developed an affordable, climate-resilient farming system known as the Greenhouse-in-a-Box.

This innovation helps farmers:

• Protect crops from extreme weather
• Reduce water usage significantly
• Increase crop reliability and yield
• Extend growing seasons
• Reduce financial risk

But Kheyti understood that technology alone would not solve the problem.

They created a full support ecosystem by also providing:

• Training programs for farmers
• Financial access and payment support
• Ongoing agricultural guidance
• Community education around sustainable farming practices

This holistic approach helps ensure farmers can confidently transition into more stable and sustainable growing methods.
